PLAINTIFF — OPENING STATEMENT

Per my earlier conversation (and the two follow-ups since), on the 4th my boss's card declined at the team lunch. I covered the remaining $60 in cash so we could leave. My boss said, verbatim, 'Venmo you tonight, promise.' That was 21 days ago. I have since sent one recap email ('circling back on the lunch balance'), one Slack DM, and stood in her doorway once. Each time I receive 'let's take this offline' or 'great flag, I'll action it.' No action has been taken. I am not requesting interest. I am requesting the principal and an acknowledgment that a manager who approves my expense reports cannot expense herself onto my debit card. I trust this finds resolution.

DEFENDANT — DEFENSE

So fun to see this here!! 🙂 Quick context — that lunch was a TEAM celebration I organized to boost morale, and it was a huge hit! When my card had a little hiccup, a team player stepped up, which I LOVED to see!! I fully intend to settle up — I've just been slammed shipping Q3! Also fun fact: the group birthday card everyone signed? Someone still owes ME $12 for that. So really we're almost even!! Let's take this offline and celebrate how well we collaborate!! 🎉

THE PLAINTIFF DEMANDS

$60 returned via Venmo by Friday, and one email that does not contain the phrase 'circle back.'

Jury deliberation

  • JUROR #107 · 21H AGO

The tell is 'let's take this offline' — deployed three separate times per the filing. That's not a payment plan, that's a containment strategy. Note the defense pivots instantly to the $12 birthday card, classic counter-ledger deflection. She verbatim said 'Venmo you tonight, promise' on the 4th and has actioned nothing. The real power move: only the person who approves the expense reports gets to owe money forever.

  • JUROR #143 · 12H AGO

She used your debit card like the shared fridge — reached past the label and called it 'collaboration.' A declined card at the register is a you-problem, not a team-building activity. Settle the $60. The $12 card fee is a separate receipt and she knows it.

  • JUROR #245 · 5H AGO

boss declined at the register and made it your problem. 21 days. guilty. next.

  • JUROR #14 · 3H AGO

Defense fails on three counts: 1) 'team celebration' does not convert a $60 loan into a gift 2) 'almost even' is not a number, $60 minus $12 is $48 3) 'slammed shipping Q3' has not stopped her from opening Slack. Owes it.
